The user interface here is exactly the same as that in the Pictures section of the Product Details tab of the Full Editor.
The specified pictures will replace the existing pictures for all selected items. Please note that if you say specify 3 pictures here but an existing selected item already has say 6, then, this will replace all existing 6 pictures with the specified 3 pictures.
